JEREMY CARNALL

CONDUCTOR

Born in Norwich, Jeremy Carnall studied the cello at Chetham's School of Music and the Royal Northern College, gaining the Diane Bolton prize for cello. While at Chetham's he gained substantial conducting experience, appearing in the Leeds Festival and making a recording of Saint-Saëns Carnival of the Animals. He was Music Director of the Todmorden Orchestra for three seasons and in his last year at college he appeared with the Gorton Philharmonic and the Lancaster University Chamber Orchestra.

Jeremy Carnall studied orchestral conducting at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague in the Netherlands, with Kenneth Montgomery and Jac van Steen.  Since graduating he has worked extensively in Holland and the UK. In 2003 he became assistant conductor with the Nationale Reisopera and has so far worked on nine productions for them: Peter Grimes (Kenneth Montgomery), The Turn of the Screw (Reinbert de Leeuw), Arianna in Creta (Jed Wentz), Der Prinz von Homburg (Rolf Gupta), Manon (Brad Cohen), Die Entführung aus dem Serail (Jed Wentz), Boris Godunov (Vassily Petrenko), Luisa Miller (Brad Cohen) and Thyeste (Stefan Asbury). He was also Chorus Master for The Rake’s Progress.

He has also conducted several productions with The New Opera, and in 2005 conducted a series of performances of Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice with the Reisopera and Het Orkest Van Het Oosten. He recently conducted Turandot for Dorset Opera with both the Alfano and Berio endings, and his current engagements include Carmen for Theater St Gallen, Les pêcheurs des perles for Dorset Opera and Seraglio for Scottish Opera. From the start of the 2008 / 2009 season, he has been appointed 1. Kappellmeister at the Theater St Gallen.
