Bornin North Yorkshire, England and studied at Exeter College, Oxford, the University of St Andrews and the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester.
Operatic roles have included the title role inWozzeck (Theater St Gallen, Maximillian Candide (Konzerthaus Vienna), Winston 1984 (La Scala, Milan), Count Almaviva Le nozze di Figaro (Garsington Opera), The Bonze Madama Butterfly (English National Opera), Odysseus Birds Barks Bones (The Opera Group), Eisenstein Die Fledermaus (Oporto), Orest Elektra(New York Philharmonic with Deborah Polaski conducted by Lorin Maazel), Nazarene Salome (Netherlands Opera, Royal Opera, London), Donner Das Rheingold (Canadian Opera Company, Flanders Opera, L’Opéra national du Rhin, Tyroler Festival) and Kamarad Der Silbersee (Wexford Festival). He also created the title role in Franz Hummel’s Ludwig 11: Sehnsucht nach dem Paradies at the Musical Theater Neuschwanstein in Füssen, a performance available on Polygram CD.
Conductors with whom he has worked include Jane Glover, Martyn Brabbins, Gustav Kuhn, Lorin Maazel, Gunther Neubold and Gerard Schwarz, whilst directors with whom he has collaborated included John Cox, David Freeman, Peter Konwitschny, Robert Lepage, David McVicar, Anthony Minghella and David Warner.
Concert work has included performances with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, Huddersfield Choral Society, the London Mozart Players, the North Netherlands Orchestra, the Northern Sinfonia, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and the Wurttemberg Philharmonic Orchestra, in repertoire including Brahms Requiem, Messiah, Carmina Burana, Mozart Requiem and Schumann Scenes from Goethe’s Faust.
Current engagements include the title role in Wozzeck and Trinity Moses The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny for the Israel Opera, Nazarene Salome at the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam, Surin The Queen of Spades for Opera North and Albert in the world premiere of Fabio Vacchi's Lo Stesso Mare at the Teatro Petruzzelli, Bari.
