After positions as chief conductor of the State Philharmonic Orchestra of Košice (Slovakia, 1990-93) of the Prague State Opera (1994-95), and as First Permanent Conductor of the Leipzig Opera (1996-98), Johannes Wildner, former violinist of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and musicologist, was "General Music Director“ of the New Philharmonic Orchestra of Westphalia from 1997-2007 (Germany) which also is the opera orchestra of the opera house in Gelsenkirchen. From September 2010, Johannes Wildner has been appointed as Principal Guest Conductor of the BBC Concert Orchestra London.
As aguest conductorJohannes Wildner has conducted major orchestras all over the world such as the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra London, the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, the Russian State Symphony Orchestra, the Symphony Orchestra of the Bavarian Radio, the orchestra of the Arena di Verona, the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, the Danish National Symphony Orchestra Copenhagen, the Odense Symphony, the Aarhus Symphony, the Gelders Orkest, the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, the Haydn-Orchestra di Bolzano e del Trento and the Orchestra di Padova e del Veneto, the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra, the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, the China and Hong Kong Philharmonic, the Guangzhou and the Shanghai Symphony or the National Symphony Orchestra of Taiwan. In Germany and Austria he has performed with orchestras like the MDR-Symphony-Orchestra, the Dresden Philharmonic, the State Philharmonic of Rhineland-Palatinate, the Radio Symphony Orchestra and the State Orchestra of Saarbrucken, the Vienna Symphony, the ORF-Radio Symphony Orchestra Vienna, the Tonkuenstler Orchester Niederoesterreich, the Bruckner-Orchestra Linz, the Mozarteum-Orchestra Salzburg.
Johannes Wildner has recorded more than 60 CDs and videos and DVDs, including complete performances of Carmen, Così fan tutteand Die Fledermaus; Bruckner’s Symphony No. 3(in all versions) and Symphony No. 9(with the reconstructed finale by Samale, Philips, Mazzuca and Cohrs). Most recent recordings include 3 CDs with music by Erich Zeisl, Josef Marx and Johann Nepomuk David with the RSO Vienna and the cpo label, as well as, in 2010, a 3-CD box with Schumann's Complete Works for Piano and Orchestrawith Lev Vinocour, piano and the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra for Sony RCA Red Seal. This season, a CD with works by the Strauss family, with the Vienna Johann Strauss Orchestra will be released on the Marco Polo label, as well Beethoven’s 7th Symphonyand Violin Concertowith Alexandre Da Costa and the Taipei Symphony Orchestra for Warner.
Johannes Wildner has always devoted an important part of his activity to opera. He has performed at the Prague State Opera, Leipzig Opera (TV-recordings of Così fan tutte and Le nozze di Figaro) and at the Musiktheater im Revier/Gelsenkirchen, Germany (Lulu, Der Rosenkavalier, Falstaff, Il trovatore, Der Freischütz), also at the Wiener Volksoper (Ein Nacht in Venedig), the Operetta festival of Mörbisch (Wiener Blut), the Berlin Metropol-Theater (Das Land des Lächelns, Die lustige Witwe), the Wagner-Festival in Wels (Tristan und Isolde), the Vienna Summer Festival "Mozart in Schönbrunn" (Don Giovanni, Die Zauberflöte) the Carinthian Summer (The Martyrdom of St Magnus), the NCPA in Mumbai (Madama Butterfly), the "Festival de Mayo" in Guadalajara/Mexico (Fidelio, Madama Butterfly), the Opernhaus Halle (Der fliegende Holländer), Graz Opera House (La bohème), the Salzburg Landestheater (Hänsel und Gretel, Die Entführung aus dem Serail), Bratislava National Opera (Il trovatore), Brno National Theatre (Tosca), the Croatian National Theatre Zagreb (Carmen, Don Giovanni), the Arena di Verona (Carmen) and the New National Theatre Tokyo (Die Fledermaus).
Last season, he conducted Don Giovanni at the St Margarethen Festival and Die Zauberflöte at the Teatro Carlo Felice. Highlights of this season are Cavalleria Rusticana and I Pagliacci in Taipei, concerts with the Shanghai and Guangzhou symphony orchestras, a 25th Anniversary concert with the Vienna Jeunesse Orchestra for the 25th anniversary, and an Opera Gala at the Frankfurt Alte Opera.
