Australian Mezzo-soprano Catherine Carby studied at the Canberra School of Music and the Royal College of Music, London.
In Australia she has performed with the major opera companies including Opera Australia, Opera Queensland, Victoria State Opera and West Australian Opera in roles including Romeo I Capuleti e i Montecchi,Countess Geschwitz Lulu, for which she was nominated for a Green Room Award, Hippolyta A Midsummer Night’s Dream,the title role in Carmen, Mallika Lakmé, Ruggiero Alcina,Cornelia Giulio Cesare,Donna Elvira Don Giovanni, Nicklausse Les contes d’Hoffmann,RosinaIl barbiere di Siviglia, Smeraldina The Love for Three Oranges, Suzuki Madama Butterfly, Prince OrlofskyDie Fledermaus, Octavian Der Rosenkavalierand Fenena Nabucco.
Catherine Carby was a finalist in several major competitions including the Kathleen Ferrier Award, the Richard Tauber Award and the Young Concert Artists Trust. She also made debuts with English National Opera and Scottish Opera and sang Vitige Flavio and the title role in Muzio Scaevolaat the London Handel Festival.
International concert and recital engagements have included Sea Pictureswith the Melbourne and Queensland Symphony Orchestras, Messiah for the Sydney Philharmonia Choirs, Haydn Arianna auf Naxoswith the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and Missa in tempore Belli with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, Das Lied von der Erdewith the Gardner Chamber Orchestra in Boston, Mozart Requiem with the Sydney Philharmonia, Der Rosenkavalier with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra and a Verdi Galafor the Hallé Orchestra under Sir Mark Elder.
Her recordings include The Love for Three Oranges for Chandos CD, Der Rosenkavalierfor Opera Australia CD / DVD and Classic 100 Opera for ABC.
Recent engagements have included Arsace Partenope for Opera Australia, Don Ramiro La finta giardiniera at the Buxton Festival, Beethoven Symphony No. 9 with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Messiah at the 2013 Three Choirs Festival.
During 2013 / 2014, she makes her debut the Royal Opera, London, for whom she will sing Soeur Mathilde Dialogues des Carmélites, Second Maid Elektra and Voice from Above Die Frau ohne Schatten. Her current engagements further include Romeo I Capuleti e i Montecchi for Chelsea Opera Group, Brangäne Tristan und Isolde for Longborough Festival Opera, the C.P.E. Bach Magnificat with the Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra, Dvorak Songs with The Gould Trio, Taverner Supernatural Songs with the City of London Sinfonia and an Opera Gala with the Royal Northern Sinfonia.
