Winner of both First Prize and the Audience Prize at the 2006 London Handel Singing Competition, Nathan Vale was born in Stourbridge and was a Choral Scholar at Wells Cathedral before attending London’s Royal College of Music, where he studied with Ryland Davies in the Benjamin Britten International Opera School as one of the first recipients of the Peter Pears Scholarship. He was also awarded an Independent Opera Vocal Scholarship to the National Opera Studio, where he was further supported by Christopher Ball, the Elmley Foundation, English National Opera, the Nicholas John Trust and The Seary Trust. He continues his studies with Jeffrey Talbot.
Winner of the 2005 AESS English Song Competition, Nathan Vale’s recital engagements have included appearances at the Wigmore Hall, the Three Choirs Festival and a recital with Julius Drake as part of the Temple Recital series. With Paul Plummer, he has recorded Love’s Voice (Songs by FInzi, Gurney, Ireland and Venables) for SOMM CD.
With the Aarhus Symphony Orchestra, he has sung the Christmas Oratorio conducted by Harry Chistophers and Arias St John Passion conducted by Paul Goodwin and with the RAI Symphony Orchestra, Die Erste Walpurgisnacht conducted by Sir Neville Marriner and Theory / Arithmetic L’enfant et les sortilèges conducted by Jeffrey Tate. Other concert highlights have included Evangelist St Matthew Passion with the Northern Sinfonia conducted by Thomas Zehetmair, Arias St Matthew Passion with the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano conducted by Ruben Jais, Beethoven Choral Fantasia at the BBC Proms conducted by Sir Roger Norrington, Israel in Egypt at the Three Choirs Festival, Hereford, conducted by Stephen Layton, Messiah with the Ulster Orchestra conducted by Matthew Halls, Solomon with the London Handel Festival Orchestra conducted by Laurence Cummings and Mozart Mass in C Minor with the Bach Choir conducted by David Hill.
At the BBIOS, he sang Alessandro Poro, rè dell’Indie and Nerone L’Incoronazione di Poppea and since graduating his operatic engagements have included First Prisoner Fidelio for Glyndebourne Festival Opera, Damon Acis and Galatea for Transition Opera, Oronte Alcina and Lurcanio Ariodante for English Touring Opera, Lurcanio Ariodante at the Bolshoi Opera, Emilio Partenope for Les Azuriales Opera, Grimoaldo Rodelinda for Iford Opera, Nencio L’infedelta delusa for Bampton Classical Opera, Friend of Seneca The Coronation of Poppea for English National Opera and Belfiore La finta giardiniera for Opéra de Baugé.
Current engagements include Belfiore La finta giardiniera at the Grand Théâtre du Luxembourg and for Opéra de Toulon, First Armed Man The Magic Flute for English National Opera, Mr Buchanan in the 2011 revival of The Opera Group’s award-winning production of Street Scene, which tours throughout the UK, as well as to the Theater an der Wien, Evangelist St Matthew Passion for the London Handel Festival 2012, J. S. Bach Magnificat with the Northern Sinfonia, Britten Spring Symphony for Midland Festival Chorus, Handel Ode for St Cecilia’s Day with both the Israel Camerata and the Riga Chamber Choir and Mozart Requiem with the London Mozart Players.
