MEZZO–SOPRANO

Catherine King is acknowledged as one of the most versatile mezzo-sopranos of her generation, with a huge repertoire ranging from music of the Middle Ages to contemporary works by Tansy Davies and John Woolrich. She continues her studies with Josephine Veasey. She has performed with many of the UK’s leading ensembles and orchestras including the Academy of Ancient Music, the CBSO, the English Chamber Orchestra, Florilegium, Fretwork, Gabrieli Consort & Players, Gothic Voices, the Hallé, London Baroque, the Nash Ensemble, the New London Consort, the Northern Sinfonia, the Royal Philharmonic, the RLPO and the Taverner Consort. She also makes regular appearances at the Aldeburgh, Bruges Early Music, Edinburgh, Lufthansa and Three Choirs Festivals. International engagements have included the Christmas Oratorio with the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra, The Dream of Gerontius in Warsaw, Messiah with the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra and The Fairy Queen for the Coro della Radio Svizzera.

Catherine King’s recordings include Bach Arias with the Norwegian Baroque Orchestra, the award winning Airs de cour, Vizzana Componimenti musicali and Verdelot The Complete Madrigal Book of 1536 (Linn), Dowland Lachrimae (Naxos), Judas Maccabaeus from the Maulbronn Festival (K & K), Andrew Keelings’s Sad Steps – New Settings of Renaissance Poems (Riverrun), Milán – Songs and Solos and Mudarra – Songs and Solos (ASV) and Tomkins – Above the Starrs (Harmonia Mundi).

Operatic engagements have included Alisa Lucia di Lammermoor for Iford Arts, Vitige Flavio with the Early Opera Company, Ernesto Il mondo della luna for Opera Della Luna, La Speranza L’Orfeo for the English Bach Festival and Filipyevna Eugene Onegin for Longborough Festival Opera. Current highlights include tours with the Israel Camerata singing J. S. Bach’s Cantata 169, Dido Dido and Aeneas and Il tramonto and with the New London Consort singing J. S. Bach’s Easter Oratorio and Vivaldi Gloria.  Her recording, Forgotten Arias of a Venetian Master - Arie Serie by Galuppi, was selected as a GRAMOPHONE Editor’s Choice CD for January 2007.
