SIMON LOBELSON
BARITONE Born in Sydney Simon Lobelson grew up in Brussels. He gained First Class Honours in his BA, Music, from the University of Sydney, working with John Pringle. He gained the Tinker Award at the Australian Singing Competition, and moved to London to study at London’s Royal College of Music on a Stanley Picker Scholarship and a Martin Harris Scholarship. He graduated from the BBIOS with distinction in 2006, and continues his studies with Sir Donald McIntyre. At the BBIOS, his roles included Junius / The Rape of Lucretia, Don Alfonso / Così fan tutte, L’Horloge – Le Chat / L’enfant et les sortilèges and Dr Falke / Die Fledermaus. His other roles have included Nottingham / Roberto Devereux for Valladolid Opera, Plunkett / Martha for Haddo House Opera, The Prig in Elizabeth Maconchy’s The Sofa for Independent Opera at Sadler’s Wells, Don Alfonso / Così fan tutte and Marcello / La bohème for British Youth Opera, The Drunken Poet / The Fairy Queen for Pinchgut Opera, L’Horloge – Le Chat / L’enfant et les sortilèges for the European Opera Centre and Harry Easter in The Opera Group’s award-winning production of Street Scene. Simon Lobelson sings regularly in concert. He has appeared as soloist in Gubaidulina's Jetzt Immer Schnee with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and at the Lucerne Festival, conducted by Pierre Boulez, whilst his broadcasts and recordings include In Tune for BBC Radio 3, The Sofa for Chandos (conducted by Dominic Wheeler) and David et Jonathas and The Fairy Queen for ABC Classics (conducted by Antony Walker). Recent engagements have included Starveling / A Midsummer Night’s Dream for Longborough Festival Opera, Joabel / David et Jonathas for Pinchgut Opera, Quinault / Adriana Lecouvreur for Chelsea Opera Group, Aeneas / After Dido (Cover) for English National Opera, Figaro / The Barber of Seville for Garden Opera, Father / The Seven Deadly Sins (Cover) at Covent Garden, the St John Passion for the Brighton Festival Chorus and Berio Sinfonia at the Lucerne Festival, conducted by Pierre Boulez. Current engagements include Osmin / Zaide for the Classical Opera Company, Prow & Fiddler / Ludd and Isis for ROH2, the Nelson Mass on tour with the Israel Camerata, as well as with the London Mozart Players, and Mozart Mass in C Minor at Symphony Hall, Birmingham.
