ALWYN MELLOR

SOPRANO

Alwyn Mellor studied at the Royal Northern College of Music and undertook masterclasses with Brigitte Fassbaender, Hugues Cuènod and Alfredo Kraus.  Her subsequent studies have been assisted by awards from the Peter Moores Foundation, which have enabled her to spend time both in Italy and St Petersburg. For Welsh National Opera, she has sung roles including Micaëla Carmen, Marguèrite Faust, Fiordiligi Così fan tutte, Donna Elvira Don Giovanni, Liù Turandot and Senta Der fliegende Holländer. Other UK appearances have included La Wally, Santuzza Cavalleria Rusticana and Elettra Idomeneo for Chelsea Opera Group, Mimì La bohème and Agathe Der Freischütz for ENO, Donna Elvira Don Giovanni for Glyndebourne Touring Opera, Marenka The Bartered Bride and Tatyana Eugene Onegin for Opera North and Gerhilde Die Walküre at the Edinburgh Festival. International engagements have included Euridice Orfeo ed Euridice at the Palacio de Festivales de Cantabria, Hanna Glawari The Merry Widow for Opera Ireland, Donna Elvira Don Giovanni and Chrysothemis Elektra for the Canadian Opera Company Countess Almaviva Le nozze di Figaro, Fiordiligi Così fan tutte and Alice Ford Falstaff for Santa Fe Opera and Fiordiligi Così fan tutte in Treviso.

In concert, Alwyn Mellor has appeared throughout the UK with orchestras including the Academy of Ancient Music, the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, the BBCSO, the CBSO, the Hallé, the LPO, the Manchester Camerata, the RLPO, Sinfonia ViVA and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra at venues such as the Cardiff, Edinburgh and Three Choirs Festivals, the Welsh Proms, the Royal Festival Hall, the Queen Elizabeth Hall, St David’s Hall and Symphony Hall, Birmingham, as well as internationally with the Amsterdam Bach Soloists, the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestre National de Lyon, the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg, the Orchestre Symphonique et Lyrique de Nancy, the Orquesta Simfonica de Barcelona, the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and the Orquesta Sinfónica de Galicia. Conductors with whom she has worked include Sian Edwards, Martin André, Howard Arman, Jan Caeyers, Paul Dombrecht, Mark Elder, Christopher Hogwood, Emmanuel Krivine, Sir Charles Mackerras, Diego Masson, Marc Minkowski, Nicholas McGegan, Antonio Pappano, Victor Pablo Pérez, Donald Runnicles, Gerard Schwarz and Mark Wigglesworth. Her concert repertoire includes Beethoven Christus am Ölberge, Missa Solemnis and Ninth Symphony, Brahms Requiem, Britten Spring Symphony, Elgar The Kingdom, Mahler Symphonies 2, 4, and 8, Elijah, the Four Last Songs, A Sea Symphony, Verdi Requiem and Zemlinsky Lyric Symphony.

Recent and current engagements include Adalgisa Norma for English Touring Opera, the title role in Tosca and Bronwen Jones Carbon 12 (Errollyn Wallen) for Welsh National Opera, Ariadne Ariadne auf Naxos for Opera Ireland, Chrysothemis Elektra for Opera North, Immolation Scene Götterdämmerung at the Barbican Hall, Liebestod Tristan und Isolde with the Norfolk Symphony Orchestra, Beethoven Choral Symphony for Raymond Gubbay, a Christmas Gala for the Ten Tors Orchestra and Friday Night is Music Night for BBC Radio 2.
