REBECCA RYAN
SOPRANO Rebecca Ryan first came to international prominence when she gave the UK première of the newly rediscovered Gloria by Handel at London’s Royal Academy of Music conducted by Nicholas McGegan. She was born in New Zealand and graduated with a First Class Degree in Music from the University of Otago. She won the New Zealand Performing Arts National Award for Singing before moving to London, where she studied at the Royal Academy of Music with Penelope Mackay and won many awards including the A M Parker Prize, the Estelle Hulbert Kobler Award and the Rutson Prize for English Song. She is an Associate Artist of the Classical Opera Company and as a 2007 recipient of an INDEPENDENT OPERA at Sadler's Wells' Voice Fellowship, she is currently studying with Dame Anne Evans. Concert engagements have included performances with the Irish Baroque Orchestra, the London Soloists’ Chamber Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the RTÉ Concert Orchestra and the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra at venues such as the National Concert Hall, Dublin, the Royal Festival Hall, the Queen Elizabeth Hall, in a repertoire including the J. S. Bach B Minor Mass, Christmas Oratorio, Magnificat and St Matthew Passion, Canteloube Songs of the Auvergne, Messiah, The Creation, Mahler Symphony No. 8, Mozart Exsultate Jubilate, Mass in C Minor and Requiem, Poulenc Stabat Mater and Tippett A Child of Our Time. Her operatic roles have included Micaëla Carmen for the University of Otago Opera, Angelica Orlando for Independent Opera at Sadler’s Wells (a role she also covered for London’s Royal Opera), Blonde Die Entführung aus dem Serail, Pamina The Magic Flute and Elvira The Italian Girl in Algiers for Opera Project, Cherubino Le nozze di Figaro for The Classical Opera Company Mme Silberklang Der Schauspieldirektor for Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, Anne Page The Merry Wives of Windsor for Opera South and Nannetta Falstaff for Iford Arts. Her recordings include Silete venti for Naxos and Exsultate Jubilate for RTÉ TV’s The Mozart Sessions, and current engagements include Micaëla Carmen for the RTÉ Concert Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Dorotea Don Chischiotte nella Sierra Morena for Musikwerkstatt Wien, Angelica Orlando at the Wigmore Hall, Barmherzigkeit Die Schuldigkeit des Ersten Gebotesand Fauno Ascanio in Alba for The Classical Opera Company, Pamina Die Zauberflöte for Southern Opera, Christchurch, Olympia / Giulietta / Antonia / Stella The Tales of Hoffmann for Mid Wales Opera, Lidka The Two Widows for Scottish Opera, Elijah with the Auckland Philharmonia, Mozart Mass in C Minor at the St Endellion Music Festival, Pergolesi Stabat Mater with Sarah Connolly and Bath Philharmonia, Tavener Sollemnitas in Conceptione Immaculate, Beatae Maria Virginis with the City of London Sinfonia at the Brighton Festival, Opera Galas for Castleward Opera and the Four Seasons by Candlelight tour for Raymond Gubbay Ltd.
